Coffees from the Dominican Republic are smooth, bright, and romantic, with medium body, non-bitter, non-acidic. Some of the best Dominican coffees available are from the Barahona and Cibao regions. From us at Caribbean Coffee you can order three different types of Cibao coffee.
Dominican Coffee Culture
The first coffee seeds arrived in Hispaniola from Martinique between 1725 and 1735. A few years later, young plants were taking root in the rich soils of what is now the Dominican Republic. And there, coffee flourished. The offspring of those original plants still grace the forested slopes of the DR, where some of the oldest coffee farms in the New World produce extraordinary coffee that reflects this remarkable heritage.
For almost years, coffee has been an integral part of the Dominican culture. “Dominicanos” are fanatic about growing, brewing—and enjoying!—great coffee. Whether in the bustling capital of Santo Domingo or in the smallest rural village, you’ll find that quality coffee is a part of everyday life. Rich and dark, it is typically served in small demitasse cups.
In most Latin and Central American countries, coffee is produced primarily for export, however much of the coffee grown in the Dominican Republic, stays within its borders, where it is savored as an elixir of life!
For the Dominican people, coffee also is synonymous with a tranquil, unhurried lifestyle, where there is always time for simple pleasures: good friends, fine food, great conversation, and of course, the taste, aroma —and elegance—of fine coffee.
The Farmers
The tradition of producing quality coffee in the DR has been handed down, from generation to generation, for hundreds of years. The heart and soul of this coffee culture is found in country’s peaceful rural areas, or “campos”, where coffee is nurtured from blossom to bean. In the countryside, people have a saying: “Community first.” Life revolves around the community. And in many ways, the community revolves around coffee.

Buying specialty coffee from the Dominican Republic, you’ll be doing more than just treating yourself to an entirely new coffee experience. You’ll also be helping to sustain hard-working coffee growers and protect a unique island ecosystem.
How is this possible? The livelihoods of approximately 500,000 people in the Dominican Republic revolve around coffee. Most of these individuals are subsistence farmers and their families. Many live in poverty. Coffee is one of the few environmentally sustainable crops that can be grown successfully by small landholders with limited resources, and in perfect harmony with many indigenous plants.
The coffee grown by Dominican Republic farmers is produced following strict guidelines designed to insure high quality and foster environmental protection. That coffee is almost exclusively shade-grown. In the DR, shade-grown coffee farms form a vital buffer zone between agricultural lands and the island’s forests. These farms help protect natural habitats that are home to rare orchids, the world’s tiniest lizard, and a stunning array of birds.
About us
Coffee has always been important to me, Frank Stenman, founder and owner of the Caribbean Coffee company, and I have travelled the world in pursuit of the perfect coffee. It has taken me a couple of years but finally I know where it is grown: on the Caribbean islands of Cuba and Hispanola. Two thirds of the latter consists of the Dominican Republic. I live in the capital Santo Domingo part of the year, only hours away from the coffee plantations and the farmers, from whom I buy the coffee that can be bought from us here at Caribbean Coffee.
Almost all Dominican coffee is organically grown, but hardly any farmers are certified. This is due to the fact that this small country has about 50 000 coffee farmers, mostly families who own on an average only about 3 hectars of land. Thus, the farms are small and it is common for farmers to join ventures to simplify administration, packaging and transport.
Our coffee brand “La Morenita” is made from organically grown premium coffee beans from the Cibao region, known for its rich coffee with medium body and almost no acid. It is Fairtrade certified by FLO-cert GmbH in Germany. From us you can also buy the traditional Santo Domingo and Induban coffees.
